« … grant me the strength to accept the
things I can’t do anything about, have courage to change the things I can, and
the wisdom to know the difference» (Francis of Assisi).
It can be hard to accept that some
things can’t be “fixed”, if you experience something unfair.
If someone treats you or other bad
it can be hard to let go of it.
In addition, it can be difficult to
dare to change the things you can actually do something about. The easiest
resort can also be to stay silent or pull away, but there is no always a good
solution. Some things that irritates and bothers me are "weathervane’s"
(værhaner). They turn the way the wind blows. So people who always agree with
the majority because they are too cowardly to stand up for what they really
mean. Watching others being mistreated, or accept that they are badly treated
themselves is not good.
«Remember, if the time should come
when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember
what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed
across the path of [an evil leader]» (Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the goblet of fire, by J. K. Rowling).
The worst is perhaps when one is
witnessing others being mistreated. To see injustice, and do nothing.
«You must
not sit in your snug home,
and say:
That's sad, poor people!
You must
not endure so very well,
the injustice that does not affect yourself!
I shout
with my voice, the last breath,
you
are not allowed to go and forget!»
(Arnulf
Øverland 1936, You must not sleep).
It is also a challenge to distinguish
between what one can do something about, and what you just have to let be as it
is. It benefits no one to hold on to things that are impossible to change.
Therefore, I think these quotes are a great inspiration.
